If you’ve ever wanted to be an influencer, you’ve reached the right place! We’ll be discussing a step-by-step process on how to become an influencer. Interested? Read on and start your journey to becoming an influencer.

1. Choose Your Niche
Before you start, figure out what your niche, or specialised segment of the market will be.
You should choose one that you are interested in and able to create consistent content
about, ideally with some expertise in the area to help you establish yourself as an
influencer.
Whether you’re interested in fitness, films, healthy eating, dance, DIY crafts or love to cook,
you need to find your calling. While you can also choose a combination of a few interests,
it’s ideal to not make it too broad.
2. Select Your Channels

Think about the type of content you want and are able to create and publish. Where do your skills lie, are you more oriented towards written content or videos? You should pick a handful of social media channels you can cover, focusing on one or two main channels. This can include Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok or any other social media channel you feel comfortable with. Once you’ve selected your channels, you need to create profiles for them, including an engaging bio, and cover photos.
3. Understand Your Audience
Before you begin to create content, understanding your target audience is essential to building and maintaining strong connections to them. Influencers do not cater to everyone, rather, those in the same niche or with similar interests. You can research influencers with similar interests to gain insights into their demographics. This may help inform your social media channels decisions. For example, a DIY and craft influencer may use Pinterest as an auxiliary social media channel since their target audience is more likely to use the platform.
4. Create Your Content
Your content should be useful and relevant for your followers; the more you can engage with your audience and build para-social relationships, the more they will be influenced by your recommendations and opinions. This will involve the formulation of a content strategy, with different types of content targeted to your audience. Many influencers choose to keep their content focused on their niche and keep their finger on the pulse for up and coming trends. This research can be used to help maintain variety in terms of the type of content created.
5. Engage Your Audience

Choose a posting frequency you are comfortable with and maintain a schedule that is regular and consistent, since many social media platforms use algorithms that preference these accounts for visibility. For most platforms, highest post engagement can be seen during the week during the late morning and afternoon hours.
Most social media platforms allow for engagement with content via comments, shares, etc. It is generally good practice to reply to comments and answer any questions followers might ask, or to “like” comments to show acknowledgement and appreciation for their engagement. Interactions like these, and asking questions, help build connections and solidify your position as an influencer amongst your audience
6. Build Relationships with Other Influencers and Brands
Finally, to become an influencer you should announce to the world that you are interested in cultivating professional relationships and brand collaborations. One way to do this is to provide contact details for potential clients by either writing it in your bio or doing outreach and messaging relevant brands with a pitch on what you can offer. Increasingly, there have been more and more platforms which allow brands and influencers to reach each other. It’s increasingly important to network with brands since these may lead to future collaborations.
While these are general tips you can use to become an influencer, it’s important to remember that this is a process that takes time, effort, and a bit of luck to yield results; it is rare to become an influencer overnight. However, it is possible to become an influencer and make money through social media marketing online.
